Kremlin Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov said that the Russian military casualties were a great tragedy for Russia and signaled that the possible invasion was coming to an end.
Since Russia’s “special military operations” began in February, there have been questions about how many Russian soldiers have been killed or injured during the fighting. Russia’s Defense Ministry says more than 1,300 soldiers have died, NATO estimates the number between 7,000 and 15,000, and Ukraine says there have been more than 16,000 Russian casualties.
“(We) hope that in the coming days, in the future, this operation will achieve its objectives or will complete it by negotiations between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations,” Peskov said during an interview with Sky News as quoted by the Daily Mail. NewsweekFriday (8/4/2022).
The pro-Kremlin news outlet Komsomolskaya Pravda posted a story in March citing Russian Defense Military officials that nearly 10,000 soldiers had died in Ukraine. However, those numbers were quickly removed from stories and articles that are no longer on the website.
Peskov previously said that disclosing the number of victims was the exclusive prerogative of the Russian Defense Ministry. Since the start of the invasion, the Russian Ministry of Defense has provided very limited updated figures.

“Regarding numbers, we agreed early on that we don’t have the authority to voice them during special military operations,” Peskov said, according to CNBC.
