After 2017 with the U19s, Krefeld will once again host a European Championship next weekend, this time for the U23s. The event was originally assigned to Rostov-on-Don (Russia). In connection with the war against Ukraine, however, the world rowing association “worldrowing” approached Krefeld, which was second in the selection, with a request to take over the event. The organizing committee took on this feat. Roland Lang (Management Board Member): “For the city and above all for us as Crefelder RC, this is an absolute highlight”. Tobias Weysters, who is responsible for competitions at the DRV, is also pleased that “after the European Championships last year in Munich, another top international event will be held in Germany”.
Although the Elfrather See is artificially created from a gravel pit, it is now a natural recreation area. This corresponds to the concept of “worldrowing”, which wants to position rowing more than before as a sustainable sport. For the Crefelder RC, which is also celebrating its 140th anniversary this year, it is gratifying that the finish tower and stands have been renovated and expanded in connection with the regatta. The Krefeld regatta course is thus strengthened and profiled for further tasks in the range of competitions in the DRV.
There are entries from 27 nations with around 330 participants for the 22 races. The largest team is the DRV with 13 boats (BLM1x, BLM2x, BLM4x, BLW2x, BLW1x, BLW2-, BM2x, BM4x, BM4-, BM8+, BW1x, BW2x, BW8+). The athletes have been preparing for the European Championships on the Baldeneysee in Essen since August 16 and are to be brought up to the international level. On the other hand, other nations start with medal winners from the U 23 World Championships in Plovdiv or the U 19 World Championships in Paris. The expectations of sports director Mario Woldt are correspondingly cautious: “A European championship is always something special and we hope that we can develop and motivate our prospective athletes for further tasks. Given the strong international competition, every place in the final is a success.” The sports director of the DRV is grateful that the clubs are willing to make a significant financial contribution themselves. Funding from the federal government is at least available as project support for this championship.
The preliminary decisions are scheduled for Saturday, August 26th, starting at 9:00 a.m. Sunday begins with a few semi-finals before the first C-final starts at 09:30.
