As in many places, there have also been solidarity campaigns in Krefeld around the rainbow colors, which are considered to be a sign of solidarity with homosexuals and other sexual orientations. The city, the Christopher Street Day Committee (CSD) and the Krefeld company Laser-Art have bathed the Grotenburg in rainbow colors, as is the case with football stadiums in other cities such as Cologne, Frankfurt, Berlin or Augsburg as a replacement for the one in Munich was the case. As is known, the plan to illuminate the stadium was prohibited by UEFA. “It was quite a blow job. At 2 p.m. I got a call asking if it was possible, only the financing had to be clarified. At 4 p.m. the OK came. We were just in our second office near Koblenz and then quickly drove back in the evening traffic jam. Unfortunately, we even packed the wrong box in a hurry and had to borrow cables and plugs on site, ”reports Jürgen Engel from the Laser Art team.

Stadtwerke Krefeld also took part. “At noon the idea came up to do something. We quickly discarded an illumination of the SWK Tower itself. That would not have been possible in the short space of time. But we then put a bus in front of the building and lit it. We expressly support the initiative for LGBTQ rights, ”says SWK spokesman Dirk Höstermann. LGBTQ is an abbreviation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Transgender Queer taken from the English-speaking world.

These campaigns are of great importance to the Krefeld queer community. “I am queer and I am involved in the CSD committee for the concerns of LGBTQ people. I have of course noticed the new legislation in Hungary and find it frightening. Even the actions of the DFB-Elf, like Manuel Neuer’s armband and various statements, were a great sign for me. But I think what’s happening now is incredibly great. The hype that has developed over the past two or three days is just awesome. The Grotenburg in particular has a high emotional value in Krefeld, ”says Levent Sirkan, member of the CSD board. “From my point of view, what is currently on is really big cinema. This broad support gives a nice feeling. However, some comments on social media and under articles also show that we still have a lot of work to do, ”said the activist.
