The city of Krefeld has announced that a 17-year-old schoolgirl has died as a result of a tuberculosis infection. She had previously been sick for a long time. The girl’s contact persons, including 50 classmates and teachers, were identified. You will need to have a blood test and, as an adult, an X-ray of your lungs.
October 2020: Last tuberculosis case in NRW
The bacterial infection is usually infected via droplets in the lungs. In most infected people, the disease does not even break out because the immune system successfully fights the pathogens.
The last case of tuberculosis in NRW performed in Mönchengladbach in October 2020. The Hans-Jonas Comprehensive School in Neuwerk was affected at the time. At the time, the city administration did not want to reveal whether the sick person was a student or a teacher.
Few tuberculosis deaths in Germany
The disease can be cured with the use of various drugs. If left untreated, the disease can be fatal.
According to the Robert Koch Institute, there were 129 tuberculosis deaths in Germany in 2019. Around 85 percent of all tuberculosis cases occur in Africa, Southeast Asia and the western Pacific region.
