(hgs) In their search for new young players, the Krefeld Pinguine found what they were looking for in Cologne. Defender Sandro Mayr will join the DEL2 team from the 2022/23 season. The 18-year-old defender is moving from the Junghaie DNL team to Westparkstrasse. “I’m looking forward to a new challenge and I’m convinced that I can take the next step with the penguins. Krefeld is a good location for young players. I find the mixture of ice age, responsibility and experienced teammates very interesting. The club has a long tradition and I’m happy to be able to write part of its history,” said the youngster.

The left-handed shooter has always belonged to the junior national team in his respective age group in recent years. His last international appearance was the U18 Junior World Championships in Frisco, Texas, USA in 2021. Before moving to the Kölner Haie, Mayr, who was born in Kufstein, Austria, first learned to play hockey in his hometown at HC Kufstein and until 2020 at the Starbulls Rosenheim . In the past two seasons, the 1.70 meter tall mobile defender has gained match practice with the upper division Diez-Limburg and in the DEL2 at EC Bad Nauheim through a support license.

More players from the DEL squad from the old season are leaving the penguins. Anton Berlyov is drawn back to his Russian homeland. The departures of striker Lucas Lessio and goalkeeper Oleg Shilin, who was introduced as a newcomer to the Kölner Haie on Friday, are particularly painful. His wife Anastasia will continue to work in the penguins office.

The departure of the German-Russian had already become apparent at the beginning of the year when the RP found out that his contract contained a termination clause and that his good performance made him interesting for other DEL clubs.

The KEV fans had hoped that Lessio would stay. Because the Canadian striker extended his contract, which should also apply to the second division, by two years in February. “I’m happy that we were able to give the great fans a win to say goodbye. We have the best fans in the league here in Krefeld. I’ll relax first and then come back to Krefeld,” said the 29-year-old after the last game of the season against Mannheim.
