Show

Krefeld. Speaking of Krefeld’s city history – in January 1970 the Niederrheinhalle on Westparkstrasse was transformed into a musical event hall for one of the most outstanding and successful German pop stars: Udo Jürgens and his band gave a live concert there for his enthusiastic fans. Otherwise the hall was the venue for concerts and sporting events – especially boxing and catching. The hall is still used today for auctions by Rinder-Union West eG.

Professional background

From 1954 to 1965 Lengwenings worked as a press photographer for the Neue Rhein / Neue Ruhr Zeitung (NRZ) in Krefeld. From 1965 to 1970 he worked as a photo journalist for the Westdeutsche Zeitung (WZ) in Krefeld. In 1970 he finally moved to the city of Krefeld, where he headed the cityscape office until his retirement in 1989 (later press office). There he documented almost all events and activities around the city of Krefeld in a photographic and editorial manner – in addition to the current events of the day, there were in particular socio-political, historical, cultural and sporting occasions as well as events, ceremonies and anniversaries. In addition, he photographed freelance for various national media (Stern and Bild) and companies as well as private customers. When he retired in 1989, he continued to photograph as a freelancer regionally and nationally for private individuals and companies.

Documentation | archive

In his decades of work as a photographer and time chronicler, Lengwenings has created an extensive private archive that includes several hundred thousand black and white negatives – specifically from the years 1954 to 1970. In the years 1970 to 1989, all photographic documents of the time were stored in the official archive of City of Krefeld added.
