The transfer of Crimea to Ukraine in 1954 was not a “gift”, but a “concern” for the Ukrainian SSR. This was stated by the former President of Ukraine and the head of the country’s delegation to the Trilateral Contact Group on Donbass Leonid Kravchuk in an interview on the Youtube platform.
“It was a colossal concern. It’s not just that we received a gift that gave Ukraine colossal revenues, ”said Kravchuk.
Also, the former Ukrainian president noted that the Ukrainian SSR allegedly even protested against the transfer of the Crimean peninsula to its composition, as it assumed that problems might arise later.
Kravchuk also criticized the version that Nikita Khrushchev “gave” Crimea to Ukraine and advised everyone to read documents on the history of the peninsula.
Recall that in 2014, Crimea, according to the results of a nationwide vote, became part of the Russian Federation. However, Kiev continues to refuse to recognize Crimea as Russian territory.
