General Election Commissions (KPU) officially determined three pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates who will contest on 2024 presidential election.

The three pairs of presidential and vice presidential candidates appointed by the KPU are Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar, Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka, and Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD.

This determination was made after the Indonesian KPU held a closed plenary meeting on Monday (13/11) at 14.02 WIB at the Indonesian KPU Office, Central Jakarta.

“The KPU stated that the presidential candidate pair and vice presidential candidate Anies Baswedan and Muhaimin Iskandar proposed by the Nasedm Party, PKB, PKS have been declared eligible and declared as the vice presidential candidate pair for the 2024 Election,” said Indonesian KPU member Idham Khalik in a press conference in RI KPU Office.

“For the presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs, Ganjar Pranowo and Mahfud MD, proposed by the political parties PDIP, PPP, Perindo, Hanura, they have been declared eligible and declared as presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs for the 2024 elections,” said Idham.

“Furthermore, the presidential and vice presidential candidate pair Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka proposed by the Gerindra Party, Golkar, PAN, PSI, PBB, Democratic Party and Garuda Party have been declared eligible as presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs for the 2024 simultaneous elections,” he added.

The Anies-Muhaimin pair, who are members of the Coalition for Change, are supported by the NasDem Party, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the National Awakening Party (PKB) with a total of 167 DPR RI seats or 29.4 percent.

The Prabowo-Gibran pair are members of the Advanced Indonesia Coalition (KIM) supported by the Greater Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra), Golongan Karya Party (Golkar), National Mandate Party (PAN), Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), Crescent Star Party (PBB), Democrat Party and Garuda Party with a total of 42.67 percent of the vote.

Meanwhile, the Ganjar-Mahfud pair was supported by the Coalition of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), the Perindo Party, the United Development Party (PPP) and the People’s Conscience Party (Hanura) with a total of 28.06 percent of the vote.

The three presidential and vice presidential candidates were declared to have met the requirement of 25 percent of valid votes nationally.

Previously, the three presidential and vice presidential candidate pairs had carried out a medical examination at the Gatot Subroto Army Hospital. They have also been declared to have passed the health check by the KPU.

Next, they will draw serial numbers for the presidential and vice presidential candidates on November 14 2023. This will then continue with the campaign period from November 28 2023 to February 10 2024.

Ahead of the announcement of the presidential and vice presidential candidates, a crowd dressed in black held a demonstration at the Indonesian KPU office. They demanded that the KPU reject Gibran Rakabuming’s nomination as Prabowo’s running mate.

“Reject the Prabowo-Gibran candidacy process which is ethically and morally flawed,” the orator’s call was greeted by the roar of the crowd.

Apart from that, the protesters also brought a number of posters containing their demands. One of them read “The President has become a successful team” and “Gibran is an illegal vice presidential candidate”.

This ethical violation has been decided by the Honorary Council of the Constitutional Court (MKMK) against Chief Justice Anwar Usman, who is also Gibran’s uncle. Anwar was declared to have violated the code of ethics and behavior of constitutional judges in handling case number 90 regarding the requirements for presidential and vice presidential candidates.

Gibran is reluctant to take seriously those who question his candidacy. He left that to the community.

“Yes, let the residents judge,” said Gibran at Solo City Hall, Friday (10/11).
