KPU Evaluates Deaths of KPPS Officers in 2019 Elections and Implements Age Limit for Officers

Jakarta

Chief KPU Hasyim Asy’ari said that his party had conducted an evaluation to reflect on the deaths of 894 KPPS officers in the 2019 elections. He said the average age of KPPS officers who died was over 50 years old.

“The findings include the first, the average age of those who died was over 50 years. The two who died had comorbid or congenital diseases. The top three rankings for comorbidities were heart attacks, diabetes and hypertension,” said Hasyim while attending the Election Declaration Human rights friendly at Komnas HAM office, Central Jakarta, Sunday (11/6/2023).

For this reason, the KPU has conducted an evaluation by setting the maximum age of KPPS officers 50 years. This has also been implemented in the 2020 Pilkada during Covid-19.

“(KPPS officers) have a maximum age of 50 years. Because according to the evaluation, those who died were over 50 years old in the 2019 elections,” he said.

Hasyim said, for KPPS members who were sick or died, the KPU had a compensation scheme. He emphasized that the KPU is trying to provide protection to the KPPS.

“Compensation is given when an incident occurs. However, we are trying so that friends can still receive protection using Presidential Instruction No. 2 of 2021 concerning social security for workers,” said Hasyim.

The instruction also contains directions to ministries and regional governments to provide social security for election organizers. The KPU has also coordinated with the local government, because the compensation money comes from the regional government.

“There are directives to a number of ministries and also to all governors. To all regents, mayors to provide employment social security for election organizers,” he said.
