The tennis players’ tournament will take place in the Ostrava hall at the end of September
For the second year in a row, a women’s tennis tournament of the WTA circuit will take place in Ostrava. The organizers of the J&T Banka Ostrava Open 2021 event have announced that the 500 category event will be played in the Ostravar Arena from 20 to 26 September.
“We are very pleased that we have gained the trust of the WTA. The organization of this year’s event was mainly addressed and the tournament will be the only WTA 500 category in the given period, so we expect a very strong starting field,” said the head of the staff Tomáš Peter from Perinvest Group.
Leading Czech tennis players who are doing well this year should not be missing. At the Australian Open, Karolína Muchová made it to the semifinals, Barbora Krejčíková became the winner of the Grand Slam Roland Garros, Karolína Plíšková played in the Wimbledon final and Markéta Vondroušová is fighting for a medal at the Tokyo Olympics. “Last year, all the above appeared in Ostrava and their participation is, of course, a wish for this year,” said the organizers.
Last year, the Ostrava tournament in the modified WTA calendar replaced the Chinese venue of Zhengzhou, was in the Premier category and was played at the end of October. Aryna Sabalenková, who dominated singles and doubles in pair with Belgian Elise Mertens, became Belarus’s queen.
Due to coronavirus, it was played without spectators a year ago. This year, the organizers hope that the fans will get into the auditorium. “In as many numbers as possible. After a long lockdown, it definitely deserves to experience the atmosphere of such a business first-hand. Theoretically, we could fill the entire hall, so we plan to bring ticket prices closer to this goal,” said Peter.
As last year, the Czechia will organize two tournaments of the highest women’s circuit. Krejčíková won the July Livesport Prague Open in the Sparta complex in Stromovka.
