KOTOR remake: Star Wars development probably frozen – COMPUTER BILD

The long-awaited remake of the RPG classic”Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic” (KOTOR) seems to meet a similar fate as so many games from the popular brand: Like the well-connected Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier reporteddeveloper Asypr has now put work on the modernized version of the popular title on hold.-

Terminations after bad demo

According to Schreier, the Texas developer saw two major personnel changes in management roles on the project in July 2022 alone. So the studio probably fired Jason Minor, the art director, and Brad Prince, the design director for the KOTOR remake. This all happened a week after Aspyr shipped a demo to its production partners that arguably fell far short of their expectations.

Aspyr announced the game in September 2021 and had been working on the remake for three years prior to that. Now the studio wants to ask around for new orders, as sources quote the studio bosses from internal meetings. A resumption of work on the “Star Wars” project seems questionable. It is possible that Saber Interactive, which also belongs to the Embracer Group and joined the project in May 2022, will take over the development completely.

In 2023, the exclusive contract between Disney and Electronic Arts (EA) to develop “Star Wars” games expires, which opens the door for the ongoing projects at other developers such as Ubisoft and Quantic Dream. However, EA itself also has some titles from the galaxy far, far away in the fire, including the sequel to “Jedi Fallen Order” and an untitled shooter.-
