Koszalin. The viaduct collapsed. The prosecutor’s office opened an investigation

Investigators are constantly working at the crash site. The prosecutor’s office together with police technicians checked yesterday whether there were any victims under the collapsed bridge. – A thermal imaging camera has been used. At the moment, we cannot say that there are people under the rubble, says Onet prosecutor Ryszard Gąsiorowski from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Szczecin.

This is great happiness. In the video we showed this morning on Onet, you can see that the collapse of the viaduct was close to having a more tragic end. Several cars had pulled out from under the bridge just before the construction disaster. Those going in the other direction stopped at the last moment.

The absence of victims is also extremely important in terms of the investigation. At the moment, the proceedings are “in the case”, which means that no one has heard the charges.

– The first witnesses were questioned yesterday. This is the site manager, demolition manager, policemen who arrived first, and a woman whose car was parked under the viaduct and was crushed by the collapsing structure – adds prosecutor Gąsiorowski.

The investigation is carried out under an article of the Criminal Code, which speaks of bringing about a catastrophe that threatens the life and health of many people or has a huge size. – The fact that no one was killed does not mean that there was no such threat. It must be remembered that there was car traffic under the viaduct, there are also pedestrian and bicycle paths – explains the prosecutor.

Importantly, the preliminary investigators ruled out that the strong wind, which yesterday hit, among others, was due to the collapse of the bridge. Koszalin. The prosecutor’s office must secure all documentation regarding the demolition of the viaduct, both from the contractor and the investor, which is the City of Koszalin. Investigators are interested, among others, in why the Batalionów Chłopskich Street, which runs under the viaduct itself, was not closed. – We have to check if someone made a mistake – says Gąsiorowski.

The viaduct collapsed in Koszalin. How did the disaster happen?

Demolition of the viaduct at al. Monte Cassino started a few days ago. The facility itself has been out of use since March last year due to its terrible technical condition. On Thursday, the construction workers first took care of the part of the viaduct on the southern line. Later they switched to the northern thread. At some point, the whole thread began to crumble and span by span, and the bridge collapsed directly onto the road of Batalionów Chłopskich Street.
