Korean Urban Air Transportation (K-UAM) Safety Operating System Core Technology Development Project: Preliminary Feasibility Study Selected

[정보통신신문=차종환기자]

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced on the 12th that the ‘Korean Urban Air Transportation (K-UAM) Safety Operating System Core Technology Development Project’ was selected as the subject of a preliminary feasibility study at the ‘National Research and Development Project Evaluation General Committee’ held by the Ministry of Science and ICT held on the 12th.

The total project cost is 299.7 billion won, and the project period is from 2024 to 2028.

The R&D project selected this time is expected to be the first case to which the Ministry of Science and Technology’s fast-track method is applied. will be confirmed.

Previously, this project is expected to gain great momentum in the preliminary feasibility study process, as it was also selected for the ‘National Strategic Technology Project’, one of the 12 major R&D projects of the current government.

It is explained that the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport conceived the R&D project to preemptively develop core technologies for safe operation in preparation for the full-fledged growth period after the initial commercialization of UAM.

This R&D project consists of a total of KRW 299.7 billion over five years (2024-2028) to develop core technologies in three areas: △navigation and traffic management △vertiport operation and support △safety certification and integrated demonstration.

When linked with the demonstration project (Grand Challenge) that will be promoted from August this year and the two R&D projects currently being pursued for early commercialization, a great synergistic effect is expected to occur.

In order to confirm the integrated operation such as aircraft safety and navigation and traffic management, the first stage (August 2023 to December 2024) is an open area (Goheung, Jeollanam-do), and the second stage (July 2024 to June 2025) is the metropolitan area ( Semi-city/City) We are planning to demonstrate the actual environment.

The Korean urban air transportation core technology R&D project is △UAM route real-time automation design (dynamic corridor), development of urban meteorological observation/prediction technology, etc. △Development of mobile/modular vertiport design/construction technology, etc. △Preparation of UAM certification system, communication/navigation・Aim to develop surveillance integrated demonstration technology, etc.

“UAM is a future food product with infinite growth potential, and the world is fiercely competing to preoccupy the market,” said Hyung-pil Jeon, head of the Mobility and Vehicle Bureau of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. And we need to invest now, in the early stages of the industry.”
