The cold fall continues for Korean tennis star Kwon Soon-woo (25, Dangjin City Hall).

Kwon Soon-woo fell to 200th place in the world rankings announced on the Men’s Professional Tennis (ATP) website on the 23rd (Korean time). The previous ranking was 193rd.

This is because 205 ranking points accumulated at the Tokyo Open and Busan Open Challenger, which took place in October last year, were erased. It has been about 4 years and 8 months since Kwon Soon-woo’s ranking fell to the top 200 on February 25, 2019, when he ranked 221st.

I was unable to accumulate ranking points consistently. Kwon Soon-woo won the second round of the ATP Tour Adelaide International, which he played in last January, and rose to his personal highest ranking tie, 52nd. However, after playing the Exxon Mobile Open in February, he suffered a shoulder injury and devoted himself to rehabilitation treatment for six months.

Afterwards, the ordeal continued. He returned to the US Open, a major tournament, but was eliminated in the first round, and then suffered a shocking loss to 636th-ranked Kasidit Samrez (Thailand) in the singles at the 2022 Hangzhou Asian Games (AG). After the game, he received criticism for refusing an opponent’s handshake offer and slamming his racket. He was also scheduled to participate in the men’s general division of the 104th National Sports Festival held in Mokpo, Jeollanam-do on the 15th, but withdrew due to a recurrence of his shoulder injury.

The problem lies ahead. Points accumulated at the Adelaide International competition in January will be canceled in February next year. Most of the points currently accumulated will disappear early next year. Point defense has become urgent.

Novak Djokovic (Serbia) maintained the top spot in the ATP rankings. Second place is Carlos Alcaras (Spain).
