Korean Nurses’ Health Research follow-up data released: Food and Drug Daily KFDN Food and Medicine News

The National Institute of Health is making public the Korea Nurses’ Health Study (KNHS) follow-up study data.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (Director Ji Young-mi) and the National Institute of Health (Director Park Hyeon-young) conducted a survey targeting female nurses aged 20 to 45 years of childbearing age to determine health status, lifestyle habits, work environment, and disease-related characteristics. It was announced that it was a long-term follow-up cohort study that the National Institute of Health has been promoting since 2013 to determine the impact on disease.

Meanwhile, the National Institute of Health completed a basic survey (online web and mobile survey) in 2013 and 2014 targeting a total of 20,613 female nurses who had a high level of understanding of the disease, which could increase the reliability of the survey, and have been followed for more than 10 years to date. An investigation is underway.

In particular, KNHS collaborated with the Nurses Health Study (NHS) in the U.S. to revise and supplement the questionnaire of the U.S. NHS3 to suit Korean circumstances, making it possible to conduct cross-ethnic comparative studies in the future.

It is a representative large-scale long-term follow-up cohort that was established around Harvard University in 1976 under the support of the National Institutes of Health and is still being conducted to this day. A number of major research results were published.

The follow-up survey data (2nd to 4th surveys) released this time is data tracked from 2014 to 2019 for basic survey participants, including health status, disease history, work environment, and food intake frequency of approximately 10,000 to 15,000 people. It includes data on surveys, pregnancy, and childbirth.

Meanwhile, the KNHS basic survey data (1st survey) was released through the National Institute of Health’s Healthcare Research Resource Information Center (Clinical & Omics Data Archive, hereinafter referred to as ‘CODA‘) in September 2023.

Following this release, the National Institute of Health plans to sequentially release the follow-up survey data for the fifth and subsequent periods through procedures such as data quality control and deposit.

Director Park Hyun-young said, “In the United States, many important research results have been reported through nurse health research on the impact of women’s lifestyle and health behaviors on various diseases such as cancer and chronic diseases.” He added, “KNHS data is available for women of childbearing age in Korea.” “We hope that it will be actively used in various research to improve health and prevent diseases.”

KNHS basic survey and follow-up research data can be obtained after requesting data through the Center for Health and Medical Resources Information (CODA) website*.
