Korea Surpasses China in Science and Technology: What This Means for Global Innovation

◀ Anchor ▶

It was found that Korea’s technological level in the field of science and technology has overtaken that of China.

It is said that the country has already lagged behind China in the cutting-edge bio and aerospace fields, and is also in danger of losing its lead in secondary batteries and semiconductors.

Reporter Lim Hyun-joo covered the story.

At 9:03 p.m. on February 29, local time, the Long March 3, a carrier rocket carrying a Chinese experimental satellite, was launched.

China planned 66 space launches last year and 100 times this year.

Recently, a small aircraft successfully crossed the ocean and city for the first time in the world, and at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2024), the commercialization of 5.5 generation mobile communication, which is 10 times faster than the existing 5 generation, was announced.

The strategy is to go beyond the current top-tier 5th generation communication technology and dominate the 6th generation communication market.

The Ministry of Science and ICT evaluates 136 core technologies of major countries such as the United States, China, and Japan every two years, and as of 2022, China’s science and technology level has surpassed Korea’s.

This is the first time in 12 years since the investigation began.

Korea showed the highest level in the secondary battery field, but lagged behind China in all fields of aerospace, aviation, maritime, next-generation communications, and artificial intelligence (AI).

In particular, China has narrowed the technology gap with the United States, the world’s leader in next-generation communications and AI, by 6 months and 1 year and 3 months, respectively.

At this rate, it is only a matter of time before China is overtaken in the secondary battery and semiconductor fields.

“This is a story that has already been felt in the science and technology world since the late 2010s. In particular, the aerospace, marine, high-tech, bio, and energy fields require large additional investment costs, so it is necessary to strategically accumulate science and technology and train human resources at the national level. .”

Last year, China established the China Science and Technology Commission, the control tower for the science and technology sector, and has invested an astronomical amount of budget and established a policy of first development and then regulation.

Our government cut this year’s research and development budget by 4.6 trillion won compared to the previous year.
