SEOUL, July 3 (Yonhap) — The Korea Meteorological Agency (KMA) said it detected an earthquake measuring 3.3 on the Richter scale in Kilju, North Korea, on Monday morning. . The KMA analyzed that this earthquake was “natural” and not “man-made”, which would have meant a nuclear test. The epicenter was 42 km north-northeast of Kilju County, North Hamkyong Province, and the earthquake struck at 10:4:38 a.m.
The geographical coordinates were 41.30° North latitude and 129.12° East longitude, at a depth of 14 km. It should be noted that Kilju is an administrative county that hosts the Punggye-ri nuclear test site (41.16° North latitude and 129.05° East longitude). The previous detection of an earthquake in Kilju dated back to June 25. Today’s is the 9th since the beginning of this year.
