South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol on Tuesday spoke out strongly against the military readiness after several North Korean drones flew over several South Korean cities on Monday. This is written by Reuters.
A total of five North Korean drones violated South Korean airspace as they crossed the border on Monday.
It is the first time since 2017 that North Korean drones have been flying in South Korean airspace. Both fighter jets and helicopters have been used to shoot down the drones, but to no avail.
The incident has raised questions about South Korea’s air defense at an already tense time between the two neighboring states.
– The incident showed significant deficiencies in our defense preparedness and training in recent years and confirmed the need for more intense preparation and training, President Yoon said during a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, according to Reuters.
The South Korean military has now apologized for its failure to shoot down the drones and at the same time promises to ensure courage and training for similar incidents in the future, according to Reuters.
North Korea’s drones flew over several cities in South Korea, including the capital Seoul, for about five hours.
The military said it pursued the drone over the capital for a long time, but failed to shoot it down because it could have endangered the people of Seoul.
