Ahead of the World Cup regional qualifying home game against Thailand, calls for a boycott of the game are growing online. This is a backlash against the attitude of the Korea Football Association, which does not take responsibility for conflicts within the players and coaching issues following the failure of the Asian Cup in Qatar. Attention is being paid to whether a large-scale boycott will actually take place as a way to pressure the resignation of association president Chung Mong-gyu.

The operator of the soccer YouTube channel ‘Saisamil 4231’, which has 80,000 subscribers, announced that it would boycott the match against Thailand. He posted a poster on Instagram with the phrase “Leave Your Seat, please leave your seat,” and added, “For the happiness of the players and the future of Korean soccer, Chung Mong-gyu must leave the seat and the audience must leave their seats.” “A player’s 30 years of experience can be ruined by one day of intuitive enjoyment,” he wrote. As of the 13th, this post had 17,000 likes and more than 2,000 comments.

Chung Mong-gyu, president of the Korea Football Association, bows his head after completing the announcement of the results of the KFA executive meeting on national team issues at the Football Center in Jongno-gu, Seoul on the 16th of last month. On this day, the Korea Football Association notified the national soccer team coach Jurgen Klinsmann of his dismissal. Reporter Cho Tae-hyung

Many posts encouraging a boycott of the match against Thailand were posted on ‘Efem Korea’, one of Korea’s largest internet communities. One netizen said, “The association will definitely use the players as shields to encourage ticket sales by appealing to their emotions by putting them in front of the camera and asking them to come cheer.” He argued, “We need to make foreign media pay attention to what is happening now and let the world know that the cause of this box office failure was caused by the president of the Korea Football Association and incompetent personnel.”

As they claim, a large-scale boycott of the Thailand game could be used as a way to put pressure on the association and Chairman Chung. First of all, sponsor revenue varies depending on how many spectators fill the A-match stadium. This is why we are trying to have as many A matches as possible, including friendly matches, held in Korea.

The empty seats for home games can symbolically show Chairman Chung’s status in the country. It would be a big blow if a large-scale boycott were to become a reality, especially at a time when Chairman Chung is trying to make a comeback on the international soccer stage.

Chairman Chung ran alone for the currently vacant seat on the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) executive committee in the East Asia region. He was previously elected as a member of the FIFA Council in 2017 and served for about two years. However, he was unsuccessful in being elected to the FIFA Council in 2019, and he also stepped down from his position as Vice-President of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Even in the 2023 election, he came only 6th out of 7 in an election where 5 people were elected. Currently, the only way for Chairman Chung to qualify as an international sports executive is to be elected as an AFC executive member as a sole candidate.

If Chairman Chung becomes an executive member, the possibility of a fourth term as president of the association increases. According to the Association’s Articles of Incorporation, after the third term, an executive exception review must be received by the Korea Sports Council’s Sports Fair Committee. However, if you have the qualifications of an international sports official, which is an exception, there is a high possibility that you will pass the review.

However, voices opposing the boycott are also strong. Although we agree that the association and Chairman Chung are most responsible for the failure of the Asian Cup, there are concerns that a boycott will affect performance and only the players will suffer.

The national team will play the second qualifying round for the 2026 North and Central America World Cup against Thailand at Seoul World Cup Stadium at 8 p.m. on the 21st. Then, they will play an away game at Rajamangala Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand at 9:30 pm on the 26th.
