Korea Drops to 10th Place in Global Innovation Index

According to the ‘2023 Global Innovation Index (GII) Analysis’ recently published by the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP) Innovation Information Analysis Center on the 31st, Korea’s innovation index this year fell four levels from 6th to 10th in 2022. ‘2023 World Innovation Index Analysis’ is an analysis of the ‘World Innovation Index 2023’ evaluated by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). As the ranking, which had been steadily rising from 2018 to 2021, slowed down, the country lost its first place in Asia to Singapore, which rose to 5th in the world.

The World Innovation Index integrates and evaluates 7 sectors, 21 items, and 80 individual indicators related to innovation input and innovation output. In Korea, among the seven sectors, all items except infrastructure were at similar levels or decreased compared to last year. Of the 21 items, regulatory environment and ecological sustainability ranked low at 53rd and 55th, respectively. As for individual indicators, layoff costs, net inflow of foreign direct investment relative to GDP, and implementation tariff rate were found to be indicators of weakness.

Commenting on these results, Han Hyeok, an associate researcher at the Innovation Information Analysis Center at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Evaluation and Planning (KISTEP), said, “Among the seven sectors that make up the innovation index, the level of most sectors fell except for the increase in the infrastructure sector, resulting in a decrease in the overall ranking.” did. He added, “Among the sectors that declined, the largest decline was in the institutional sector that evaluates the political environment, regulatory environment, and business environment.”

Although Korea’s comprehensive innovation index fell, it ranked high in some detailed categories. In particular, among the seven categories, it achieved first place in the human resources and research categories for five consecutive years. Among the 21 items, research and development and information and communication technology ranked first.

The top ranks of the 2023 Global Innovation Index were occupied by Switzerland, Sweden, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Singapore.
