The Broadcasting Deliberation Subcommittee of the Korea Communications Standards Commission decided to impose fines on broadcasting companies that cited and reported the interview with Kim Man-bae reported by Newstapa just before the last presidential election, along with audio recordings.

This is the highest level of disciplinary action.

There are three broadcasters subject to fines decided by the Broadcasting Review Subcommittee today: KBS, JTBC, and YTN.

These are all quotes from Newstapa’s interview with Kim Man-bae just before last year’s presidential election.

Members of the ruling party pointed out, “The broadcasters reported quotes without knowing that Newstapa had edited them, resulting in false reports and great confusion in the people’s choice.”

The imposition of a fine is the highest level of legal sanction, and this is the first time that the National Defense Commission has decided to impose a large number of severe sanctions, starting from the so-called level.

In hearing opinions prior to the decision, broadcasters explained, “We could not obtain the full transcript at the time, but we reported it because it was a social issue two days before the presidential election.”

He also said, “We tried to maintain a balance and there was no intention to influence the election.”

Today’s deliberation was led by ruling party members while all opposition members walked out, raising issues with the establishment of a ‘fake news one-stop system’.

The final disciplinary action will be confirmed at the plenary meeting of the review committee, and the so-called decision is expected to remain in place as the ruling party has the upper hand due to the dismissal of former review committee chairman Jeong Yeon-joo.

Among the broadcasters included in the review, SBS decided that there was ‘no problem’, saying ‘it was the only one that did not use the transcript as is’, while MBC requested a postponement of its statement of opinion to confirm the data.
