Sebastian Korda won the first ATP circuit at the clay tournament in Parma. The 20-year-old son of the former Czech Grand Slam champion, who represents the USA, defeated the home team in the final Cecchinata brand 6-2 6-4.
Korda turned the trophy into a second final, failing to premiere in Delray Beach in January. Before the start in Parma, he was not very good at clay. Out of four tournaments on this surface this year, he scored only one victory, but he shone in Italy and did not lose a hundred in the whole week.
“This was my dream. I thought it would work out in Delray Beach, then I was a little bad about it,” Korda admitted after the match. “But I stayed positive, even after that miserable first part of the clay season. I hit a few days, recharged my flashlights and then I managed to train well in Prague with my dad and coach for a week. I came back hungrier and now I’m playing really well,” he praised you are a native of Bradenton.
Korda was the first American in eleven years to triumph in European clay, most recently in 2010 by Sam Querrey in Belgrade. In the history of successful fathers and sons, the Kordas followed Ramanathan and Ramesh Krishnan from India and the Americans Phil and Taylor Dent.
“I had a tough opponent today and it was not easy against the audience. He was still encouraged, but I am proud of how I managed it,” Korda said of the victory over Cecchinat, who is 41 places behind him. Thanks to his success in Parma, the young American will move into the top 50 for the first time.
