Koos van Plateringen stopped drinking alcohol three years ago and feels better than ever. The presenter now comes with a podcast about alcohol use in which he tells his own story and talks to famous Dutch people about their experiences, which are also positive.
“It is not my intention to make everyone stop drinking, not even at all. But I do think we could be much more conscious about alcohol.”
“When I was little, my mother put jars with cigarettes in them on the table on birthdays for socializing, now that is unthinkable. That could also be the case with alcohol”, Van Plateringen said in conversation with NU.nl.
In Fair about alcohol the presenter speaks among others with Jan Heemskerk, who stopped drinking for health reasons, but also with Sarah Chronis, who simply did not like alcohol. Marianne Timmer explains how much she can enjoy a glass of wine now that she is no longer a top athlete and follows courses to learn more about it.
Singer Thomas Berge not only struggled with problems with alcohol, but also with drugs. The singer says that he can now drink one glass and really enjoy it.
‘The decision was made for me’
Van Plateringen last drank three years ago. “For me the decision was more or less made. My husband told me that he did not want to continue with me in this way. Every weekend it went wrong, I was a kind of ticking time bomb.”
“It was numbing myself, to the point that I didn’t know what I had done when I woke up. For a long time I thought that only my husband was bothered by it, but more and more colleagues and friends approached me about my behavior. I knew it wasn’t good, but I wanted to find a way: a glass of wine is part of it, right? “
“There is still a huge taboo on quitting drinking. Sarah Chronis told how she was asked at her brother’s wedding if she was pregnant because she did not drink. And how it is always said in the pub that she should not be so uncomfortable. to do.”
Eventually, van Plateringen came to the conclusion that for him to stop completely was better than drinking in moderation. The presenter no longer finds it difficult to tell his own story. “Three years ago I told about it in LINDA and thought it would be over. But that is not the case: I am still regularly approached by people who recognize themselves in my story. “
“Now I think that’s a very beautiful thing, because by telling my story I can help people. I have come closer to myself and experience things much more intensely. That is the starting point of this podcast: how I feel now, I wish others too. “
