Koodathayi Serial Murder Case: Supreme Court Adjourns Jolly Joseph’s Acquittal Hearing for Three Weeks

New Delhi: The Supreme Court has adjourned the hearing of Jolly’s plea seeking acquittal in the Koodatai serial murder case for three weeks. The case was transferred by a bench headed by Justice MA Sundaresh.

What is the nest case?

The case is related to the murder of six members of a family at Koodatai in Kozhikode district. On October 4, 2019, the murder of six people in the same family from 2002 to 2016 came to light. Ponnamattam Tom Thomas (66), a retired education department official, his wife Annamma Thomas (60), son Roy Thomas (40), Annamma’s brother M.M. Mathew Manjadi (68), Tom Thomas’ nephew Shaju Skaria’s wife Sili (44) and daughter Alfine (2) were killed in the case. The then Kozhikode Rural District Police Chief K. G. Simon initiated the investigation on the complaint filed by Rojo Thomas, son of Tom Thomas, who expressed doubts about the deaths.

After it was found that the deaths were murders, the police took out the parts of 6 bodies buried in 3 graves in 2 parishes and sent them for examination. Jolly Joseph, who was the main accused and the wife of the murdered Roy Thomas, was arrested for supplying cyanide to them, his relative MS Mathew in Kakat Manchadi and goldsmith Prajikumar for supplying cyanide to them. Jolie confessed to killing Roy’s mother by mixing insecticide in mutton soup and others by mixing cyanide in food and water.

Jolly Joseph and MS Mathew are currently under trial in Kozhikode District Jail. The third accused Prajikumar got bail. The trial of the case is going on from March 6, 2023 in the Marad Special Additional Court. The trial is currently in the murder case of Roy Thomas. A total of 270 witnesses. 235 documents and 23 objects were produced.

Then consider the Sili murder case. If each case takes a year, it will take 6 years to complete the trial of 6 cases. Only the body of Roy Thomas was autopsied. The cause of death was found to be cyanide ingestion. The remains of 5 other people were tested in January 2020, but the presence of cyanide was found only in Cili’s body sample. The police believe that a large amount of cyanide was used in this murder.

Experts pointed out that the presence of cyanide or other toxins could not be detected in others due to the age of the remains. Meanwhile, second husband Shaju Skaria filed a divorce petition against Jolly Joseph in Kozhikode. The High Court granted bail to Jolie in the case of killing her mother-in-law, but the Supreme Court canceled it. CPM Kattangal Local Committee Secretary Praveen Kumar, Notary C. Vijayakumar and Mykav Alammala Surendran’s wife Gypsy had defected during the trial. The police found that it was Vijayakumar who testified to the fake affidavit prepared to steal the property of Jolly Joseph’s father-in-law Tom Thomas.
