The XXL towels also have space for four people, which the municipality of Köniz BE has procured for their bathing suits.

If there are no buyers, the municipality can expect a loss in the five-digit range.

The Bern municipality of Köniz ordered 5,000 XXL bath towels for their outdoor pool at the beginning of June. With the 3 x 3 meter towels she wanted to help the guests keep the two-meter distance. The interest in the giant scarves was limited.
–
As lifeguard Peter Egger announced this week on request, towels have been rented twenty-two times for three francs a day. 90 towels are sold for CHF 30. If demand does not increase rapidly by the end of the season, Köniz risks losing a five-digit amount. The Berner Zeitung reported recently and the responsible local councilor Thomas Brönnimann confirmed this on request.
–
The cloth business did not go as planned for two reasons:
–
Minimum clearance has been reduced
First, the authorities in Köniz decided to procure the towels as there were no other rules for outdoor pools than today. When the Swiss outdoor pools were allowed to reopen on June 6th after the corona-related closings, they followed a protection concept of the Association of Indoor and Outdoor Pools in Switzerland (VHF), which required ten square meters of space per person. Many public pool managers therefore limited access to the facilities in order to provide their guests with this space.
–
At that time, according to VHF managing director Martin Enz, numerous system operators thought of distributing giant bath towels. Enz said this on request this week. Once spread out, the three by three meter XXL towels give visitors nine square meters of privacy, almost ten.
–
Already on June 19, the state government replaced the minimum distance of two meters with a 1.5 meter regulation and the VHF now recommended five square meters per person.
–
There is no congestion of visitors
The second reason for the lack of demand for the towels is that, according to Enz, the number of visitors to numerous bathing establishments in Switzerland is less than usual this year. Brönnimann also found this at the Weiermatt facility in Köniz.
–
Brönnimann speaks frankly of a “small flop”, but takes it calmly: It is actually good that the number of corona infections is low and the XXL-Tüechli does not even need it, according to the politicians of the green liberals. Corona protective measures cost something.
–
The town council of Köniz has not yet given up hope of stronger demand for the XXL towels: The high season in the baths of Koeniz does not begin until the end of July, Brönnimann continues. In the first weeks of July, many people were on vacation – this year too.
–
In Wettingen AG, the towels sell better
Enz knows only two places in Switzerland where giant pool towels are given to guests of outdoor pools: Köniz and Wettingen AG. There, those responsible for the Tägi leisure, sports and event center designed a so-called “social distance bath towel” together with an advertising agency.
–
This sells better than in Köniz, as Tägi director Marco Baumann announced this week on request: 300 pieces are gone. (SDA / szm)
