Konami scraps the Pro Evolution Soccer name when eFootball becomes free-to-play

The football winds of change are blowing hard.

Pro Evolution Soccerthe name is scrapped, as is the Japanese Winning Eleven. The last two football games from Konami have been hot eFootball PES 2020 and eFootball PES 2021. The autumn title is only called eFootball, and becomes a free-to-play game. It is revealed with the first trailer.

The football game has been rebuilt “entirely in Unreal Engine”, and will be released this fall for Playstation formats, Xbox consoles and PCs. Ios and Android releases will follow.

Of course, free-to-play does not mean that everything is free, which you probably know. Content and game modes that are released afterwards will in some cases cost money. The game will not get a physical release either, so there will be nothing you will be able to put on the shelf, Konami says in the press release.

As a digital-only title, Konami will regularly add new content and game modes after launch this autumn. In the future, certain game modes will be sold as optional DLC, giving players the freedom to build an experience that follows their interests.

Some of the plans have already been revealed, with the game’s first roadmap. Then it’s called eFotball and not eFotball 2022 it could indicate that Konami is investing in maintaining this in the future.

The earliest plans for eFootball are about tournaments and support for mobile controls.
