Kommersant reports: Rioting by supporters of “Napoli” and “Eintracht” in Naples’ city center

In Naples, fans of the football clubs “Napoli” and “Eintracht Frankfurt” staged riots before the start of the 1/8 finals of the Champions League. As transmits Sports Courier, a large group of masked German fans set fire to three vehicles, including one police officer, and also pelted the police with flares and chairs from a street cafe. The police used water cannons.

Earlier, the authorities of Naples banned Eintracht fans from Frankfurt am Main from coming to the match due to the threat of unrest. Despite this, about 600 fans of the German club gathered in the city center.

The clashes began when the German fans who staged the procession reached the square in the historic center of Naples – Piazza del Gesu Nuovo – there was a bus that was supposed to take them back to the hotel where they were staying.

“I am in constant contact with the prefect and the commissioner. I hope that the situation can be resolved without harming the city. Today should be a great day of celebration and sport and I hope that this aggressive behavior will not affect the safety of the citizens,” said Gaetano Manfredi, Mayor of Naples.

The match “Napoli” – “Eintracht Frankfurt” will begin at the stadium “Maradona” today, March 15, at 23:00 Moscow time.
