[Kolom Pakar] Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditrama: Tuberculosis and Smoking

Liputan6.com, Jakarta – Book Global TB Report 2021 mention five risk factors for the occurrence and severity of tuberculosisthat is

  1. smoking habit,
  2. malnutrition,
  3. HIV infection,
  4. diabetes, and
  5. alcohol consumption.

The relative risk rate for smoking-related TB was 1.6, with an interval between 1.2 and 2.1. It is estimated that in the world there are 0.73 million TB cases in a year which are related to habits smoke.

Other research published in International Journals Thorax January 2022 showed that TB patients who quit smoking showed better TB treatment outcomes.

So, tuberculosis patients should be advised to stop smoking.

Research published in International Journal of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (IJTLD) in February 2020 stated that smoking habits lead to worsening TB treatment outcomes and slower improvement of sputum swab and culture examinations. So that smoking control programs are an important factor for the elimination of tuberculosis in the world.
