What a game! At the start of the three-way trip, the Kölner Haie suffered a 4:5 defeat at the Eisbären Berlin in overtime on Friday evening (January 19, 2024).
After the two wins in Bremerhaven (2:1) and against Schwenningen (5:1), the KEC also started well in Berlin and had the greatest opportunity to score the first goal through Justin Schütz (10th). Shortly before the break, the Berliners, who weren’t actually in the game, scored it. Tobias Eder scored in the power play to make it 1-0, and just a few seconds later Marcel Noebels made it 2-0 (18th).
Cologne Sharks turn 0-2 deficit
A real shock for the Sharks, but they were apparently able to digest it during the break. Within just 79 seconds, Carter Proft (28th) and Stanislav Dietz (29th) equalized for Cologne. And the Krupp team wanted more! Justin Schütz deflected a shot from Brady Austin unstoppable for Berlin goalie Stettmer to make it 3-2 (32′).
With the advantage, Leo Pföderl quickly equalized just a minute later (33′). The home team turned the game around again in the final third and took the lead again through Zachary Boychuck (44′). The Haie didn’t recover from this so quickly and needed some time to get dangerously in front of the box again.
Shortly before the end, Maxi Kammerer simply shot from an extremely tight angle, surprising Stettmer in the near corner and making it 4:4 (55th). Everything happened very quickly in overtime: Berlin won the face-off, Wiederer drove the puck forward and slammed the puck into the corner after just 19 seconds for a 5-4 win for Berlin.
Haie professional Tim Wolgemuth was on the MagentaSport microphone after the game: “We played well in the first third and were suddenly 2-0 down. We actually played worse in the second third, but we scored three goals. In the end it was a shame.”
With the point, the Haie are still in sixth place with 63 points, tied with Wolfsburg and Schwenningen.
You can read the most important things from the game here:
Eisbären Berlin – Kölner Haie 5:4 (OT)
1st third: 2:0 | 2nd third: 1:3 | 3rd third 1:1 | Overtime: 1-0
1st third: It was a lively start in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, with first shots from Wissmann (1st) and Dietz (2nd) on both sides. The Haie in particular seemed confident in their actions and increasingly stood out thanks to their good build-up play from the back.
The first really big chance came in the seventh minute! Kammerer had pushed the puck forward and put the puck across in front of Stettmer’s box, but Storm only got to it with his backhand and didn’t pose any major problems for the Berlin goalie. Just two minutes later, MacLeod and a few moments later Grenier were denied by Stettmer.
Actually, the Sharks could have taken the lead at this point, but then they should have taken the lead in the 10th minute! Grenier put the disc firmly into Schütz’s barrel, which he, the Cologne offensive professional, shot alone in front of the Berlin box in a penalty style, but only at goalie Stettmer.
And then it happened, as it had to happen in sports! The Berliners used their first power play after Schütz had to go to the penalty box for two minutes for tripping. Tobias Eder was released strongly and scored to make it 1-0 for the home team (18th). At five against five, the Berliners then put together a lightning double, Noebels scored to make it 2-0 (18th).
2nd third: The Haie started well again in the second period and quickly had a double chance through Kammerer and Thuresson (21st). But with the surprising two-goal lead behind them, the Berliners now played really well. Haie goalie Ancicka made two strong saves against Eder (24th/27th).
And the KEC thought: “If the home team can do it, we can do it too!” First, Carter Proft tipped the ball over the line in the rebound to make it 1-2 (28th), only 79 seconds later Stanislav Dietz equalized (29th minute). ).
Immediately afterwards, Ancicka made another strong save in a one-on-one against Noebels and Eder. The guests scored the next goal again. Austin simply took the shot, Schütz got the scoop and the puck flew into the goal for Stettmer, making it 3-2 for the Haie (32′). Game turned!
But the polar bears had the perfect answer – and the home team scored again thanks to a Haie penalty. Sennhenn got two minutes because of hooks, Pföderl scored the equalizer in the majority (33′).
3rd third: Quite untypical for this game, both teams started the final third somewhat unspectacularly. The Berliners had their first chance through Ellis (43′) – and took the lead again a short time later. After a Haie mistake in the build-up, Boychuk grabbed the puck and scored to make it 4-3 for the Eisbären (44th).
The KEC didn’t have a quick answer and seemed a bit shocked by Berlin’s fourth goal. The hosts kept pricking the score, Haie keeper Ancicka kept his team in the game and saved the chance to equalize.
Which then fell too! Kammerer simply tried it from an extremely acute angle and surprised Stettmer. The Eisbären keeper couldn’t get his body to the post quickly enough and the puck squeezed into the net to make it 4-4 (55′).
With 70 seconds left, Tiffels circled around the KEC goal and tried the pawn trick. But again it was Ancicka who reacted outstandingly.
Overtime: And it only lasted 19 seconds! The Berliners won the face-off and struck straight away with their first goal. Wiederer came forward on the right side and slammed the disc into the far corner.
The Kölner Haie will continue on Sunday (January 21st, 2 p.m.) at the Nuremberg Ice Tigers. The game will take place at EHC Red Bull Munich on Friday (January 26th, 7:30 p.m.).
