Köln Fights for Survival in Bundesliga with Dramatic Win and Controversial Banner Incident

The classic German club Köln has had a tough season and on Saturday there was a knife to his throat at the home meeting with Union Berlin in the Bundesliga.

Köln needed to win to have a chance at a new contract, and for a long time it looked like falling out of the top flight. Köln found themselves two goals down in the first half, but eventually turned around to win, Damion Downs making it 3-2 in extra time.

Köln is still in the relegation zone, but now with three points up only Union Berlin in the qualification place for the last round of the Bundesliga. So, it’s not over for Köln, even if the team has a worse goal difference – three goals for Union Berlin.

Meanwhile, Cologne supporters held up a tasteless banner related to the match, which read: “Henriette may not be a GILF, but we still want to fuck her.”

According to German newspaper Bild, Cologne supporters are already disgruntled Henriette Reker, who is the mayor of Cologne. Reker is said to have promised city money for the club’s training facility, which needs to be rebuilt, several years ago, but that has yet to happen. Therefore, supporters have also protested against the mayor earlier in the season.

The last time “Die Geißböcke” played in the second division was in the 2018/2019 season.
