As host Geoff Kiely promised before the show, The Game Awards 2023 saw quite a few game announcements (61 to be exact). At the same time, Hideo Kojima’s OD became the leader in the number of mentions in the media, according to an analysis by FanCensus.
Although we were expecting a new Death Stranding 2 trailer from Kojima, the developer surprised everyone with the announcement of his other project in collaboration with Xbox Game Studios. You may remember that the first rumors about the Xbox project surfaced back in the first half of 2021 – insider Jeff Grubb revealed that the initially Stadia-exclusive game is now published by Microsoft and uses the company’s cloud technologies.
We first heard about Project Overdose (obviously abbreviated as OD) in June 2022 in a report by Tom Henderson. However, it mentioned actress Margaret Qualley, but she is not in the official cast: Sophia Lillis, Hunter Schaffer and Udo Kier. But that doesn’t necessarily mean Qualley won’t appear in some role.
Either way, Kojima says OD uses Microsoft’s cloud technologies to create “a uniquely immersive experience, an entirely new style of play, or even a media format.” At The Game Awards, Kojima announced a collaboration with Jordan Peele and promised to soon introduce other key people (“The Avengers”, as he called them).
As for the report, the Top 10 most covered announcements also included:
Free Roguelike DLC for God of War Ragnarok
Blade from Arkane Lyon
Sci-fi RPG Exodus from Archetype
Monster Hunter Wilds от CAPCOM
Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II by Ninja Theory
Jurassic Park Survival от Saber Interactive
Jet Set Radio and Crazy Taxi from SEGA
DLC Dredge для Dave the Diver
It’s a shame that there wasn’t room on this list for arguably the show’s most impressive gameplay, Hello Games’ Light No Fire. But all this means that many interesting projects await us in the coming years.
