“Koh-Lanta”: As expected, the accent of Vaudois Gustin makes people laugh in France

The web had a good laugh at the candidate during the first evening of the show, Tuesday on TF1.

We saw it coming. When introducing Gustin, one of the two French-speaking Swiss taking part in the new season of “Koh-Lanta”, TF1 described him as “a nature enthusiast with an irresistible accent”. The survival influencer from Yverdon speaks in fact as our French neighbours imagine the Swiss since the accent caricatured in an Ovomaltine advert from the 80s by a… Frenchman. The production was bound to play on this and social networks were going to put all their dynamite on the Vaudois.

On Tuesday, during the first episode of “Koh-Lanta”, there was no shortage of it. “They’re coming from France, Belgium and Switzerland,” says the voiceover after a few seconds of broadcast. And who is given the floor first out of 24 candidates? Gustin. “My strong point is swimming. I’m really super comfortable in the water and I’m also pretty good at survival,” he describes. Quite slowly, it’s true.

That was all it took for X to let loose: according to viewers who like to quickly comment on social media about what they see on screen, Gustin, 26, is going to put on a show for them. “Gustin’s way of speaking, I’m going to laugh out loud every week, I can’t take it anymore”; “But your way of expressing yourself is already my entertainment this season” or “Sorry but that Swiss accent there, I laughed so hard!!!! It’s like he’s in slow motion…” are the retweets.

However, even if Gustin is supposedly slow in his way of speaking, he is the one who (by far) reaches the shore first after jumping off the boat — well yes, he is a former lifeguard — and takes the time to welcome everyone with bravos.

Gustin with the reds, Michel with the yellows

On the beach, once everyone is gathered, the presenter Denis Brogniart tells him: “You were perfectly in your element.” Gustin replies in a relaxed manner: “For me, swimming is natural. I was really flexible and I came in first, but… When you swim well, it’s hard to swim slowly.” Laughter from the other candidates. Yes, even them. Even from Michel, 36, the other Vaudois of the season. But Brogniart throws a chill: “Michel, it took you almost twice as long as Gustin.” Bam! Well, the Belgian who works in Lausanne only learned to swim a year ago. We can understand him.

Michel narrowly succeeds in the first test of skill and concentration and escapes. He joins the yellow team last. Gustin, for his part, is chosen first to join the red team. With Ugo, he manages to make the fire. “It was more complicated than expected” but it was “not so complicated in the end”. On the other hand, he is afraid of losing weight, he admits…

Welcome to “Koh-Lanta”! On Tuesday, the yellow team voted and eliminated flight attendant Cécile. The next episode will air on August 27.
