You can now have a hypercar with a V8 instead of a three-cylinder engine, and with 2750 Nm of torque
When it debuted in March 2020, the Koenigsegg Gemera was presented with a combination of a two-liter 3-cylinder engine and three electric motors, developing a total of 1,700 horsepower. No one would call it modest – but now it turns out that the company had an even stronger trump card up its sleeve all along. Christian von Koenigsegg unveils Gemera with V8 At the factory expansion ceremony, Christian von Koenigsegg showed on stage a version of the Gemera in which the 2-liter engine has been replaced by a 5-liter twin-turbo V8. It adds a staggering 600 horsepower to the maximum output, bringing it to a total of 2,300. This is achieved using E85 fuel, with a 15% ethanol content. Maximum torque reaches a mind-boggling 2,750Nm – which means you’ll need some pretty special tires to withstand such inhuman abuse. That’s over 700 Nm more than the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport, and even around 400 more than the monstrous electric Rimac Neverra. The Ferrari SF90 Stradale, which is the torque record holder in the current range of the Italian company, has only 800 Nm. The ratio of 0.77 horsepower per 1 kg of weight applies to the three-cylinder version. In the V8 version, the horses are more than the kilograms, although the exact weight has not been announced yet. The eight-cylinder engine works with the 9-speed Light Speed Transmission, the Swedes’ own development. By the way, the cost of this modification is as impressive as its effect: to go from three to eight cylinders, you will have to pay an additional $400,000.
The optional engine wasn’t the only change to the Gemera shown yesterday. Koenigsegg can now fit normal side mirrors instead of the flashy but getting used to cameras it used on the original show car. The main reason is that the cameras are not yet legal in some major markets like the US for example. The plant expansion includes a new assembly area, customer lounge, test center, event space, showroom, retail space and additional warehouses. Koenigsegg is also building a dedicated test track. Although the expansion is complete, the first deliveries of the Gemera to customers will not begin until 2025. Koenigsegg plans to produce 300 units of the hypercar.
Koenigsegg estimates that the “regular” 3-cylinder Gemera can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 400 km/h. The car has four-wheel drive, rear-wheel steering and torque vectoring. The battery of the hybrid drive provides a range of up to 50 km on electricity alone.
For a hypercar, the Gemera is surprisingly luxurious inside as well. There are amenities like four heated seats, eight cup holders (some heated and cooled), front and rear infotainment screens, 3-zone climate control, front and rear wireless chargers for mobile devices.
