Ronald Koeman believes there is a chance that he will have Luis Suárez at his disposal next season. The attacker is allowed to leave FC Barcelona, but despite the many rumors, it has still not come from a transfer.
“I spoke with Luis about his future. We now have to wait and see if he will leave, because we still don’t know that at the moment”, said Koeman on Wednesday evening after the exhibition game won with Girona (3-1) at the Catalan TV3.
The 33-year-old Suárez is still under contract with Barcelona until mid-2021, but partly because of his high salary, the Uruguayan is allowed to look for another club. He seemed on his way to Juventus, but a transition to Serie A has still not come.
“We respect all players’ contracts here. So if Suárez fails to find a club and he stays, he will be treated like any other player in the selection,” promised Koeman, who did not use the former Ajax player in his first two exhibition games.
Should Suárez still leave Barcelona before the transfer deadline of October 6, there is a chance that the Spanish superpower will get Memphis Depay as his replacement. Olympique Lyon and Barcelona would already agree on the transfer fee, although that is denied by the French club.
Koeman and FC Barcelona will start the new season in La Liga on September 27 with a home game against Villarreal. The 26-time champion will first play an exhibition game with Elche for the Joan Gamper Trophy on Saturday.
