Kochi: Students of Kochi University of Science and Technology have qualified for the final round of the European Rover Challenge, a robotics science program jointly run by the European Space Agency and the European Space Foundation. Cusat’s 38-member team, who are students of mechanical and electrical computer science departments, built a prototype of the Horizon Mars rover.
Team Horizon led by Muhammad Ziyad P (Computer Science Engineering) as Team Lead, Romel Josbin (Mechanical Engineering) as Manager and Anand K Vinu (Computer Science Engineering) as Chief Designer and consisting of Nizam Abdul Aziz (Mechanical), Eldos, Adrien (Electronics) and Angelo Antro (Software), Alosh (Science), Jishnu (Media), Malavika S. (Marketing) led the six sub-teams. Cusat has achieved this feat beating top universities such as Imperial College London.
Having designed a version of the Mars rover that can move on the surface of Mars, Team Horizon is ranked 21st in the world in the competition. Out of 54 participating teams from different parts of the world, 25 teams have qualified for the finals in Poland. Horizon is the only team from Kerala to qualify. The team worked under the supervision of Sheena KM, Dr N Biju and Dr Shashi Gopalan. Vice Chancellor Dr. PG Shankar appreciated.
