Kobe Bryant was the ‘greatest Lakers of all time’
Kobe Bryant’s death in 2020 shook the basketball world. Jeanie Buss, Lakers owner and president, took a moment to reflect on her connection to the famous basketball player. Buss shared a message on Twitter paying homage to Bryant. She called the 2020 NBA Hall of Fame inductee the “greatest Laker of all time” and praised his work ethic and the loyalty he has shown throughout his 20 years in the purple and gold jersey. “I miss Kobe Bryant,” Buss wrote.

While some NBA enthusiasts see Buss’ tweet as a possible connection to the current state of the franchise, her words reflect feelings still felt by many more than two years after Bryant’s untimely passing. Buss, the daughter of former Lakers owner Dr. Jerry Buss, sat on the front row on the sidelines throughout the five-time NBA champion’s career.
A few months after Bryant’s retirement in 2016, Buss assumed control of the team and became president in March 2017 following the death of her father. That same year, Buss lobbied for Kobe’s number 8 and 24 jerseys to be retired. The ceremony took place on December 17 and made Bryant only the tenth Laker player to be honored with a retired number and the first player in NBA history to have two numbers by the same team retired.
“I wanted to make sure at the All-Star Game that his jerseys were hanging from the ceiling to remind everyone of the legacy and career that Kobe had,” Buss said in February 2018.
