Jakarta, September 8 2023
The Ministry of Health together with the DPR RI Health Caucus declared a joint collaboration to fight dengue fever in Indonesia. The collaboration, named KOBAR Against Dengue, was launched on Friday, September 8 2023 at the DPR RI, Jakarta.
Deputy Minister of Health, Prof. Dante Saksono Harbuwono said the joint coalition against dengue was a combination of all stakeholders at the central and regional levels. With the aim of accelerating the joint target of achieving zero deaths due to dengue by 2030 (zero dengue deaths by 2030).
The acceleration was carried out considering that the transmission characteristics of dengue mosquitoes had changed. If in the past dengue mosquitoes were more common during the rainy season, now, whatever the season, dengue mosquitoes can still be found. This change is what causes dengue cases in Indonesia to continue to increase every year.
“Dengue exists throughout the year, whatever the season. We see the numbers are also increasing. “The incidence rate was around 25,000/100,000 population in 2012 to 52,000/100,000 population in 2022,” said the Deputy Minister of Health.
The Deputy Minister of Health revealed that this increase did not only occur in dengue cases, but also occurred in deaths. It was recorded that in 2018 the case fatality rate was 0.71%, increasing to 0.86% in 2022.
Anticipating a higher increase in cases, the government has promoted the One House One Jumantik Movement (G1R1J). G1R1J is a community empowerment activity to control vector diseases in their own home environment.
“Through this program, people are invited to spend 1 minute at 10 am for 10 consecutive weeks. “So this program is in principle from the community for the community,” explained the Deputy Minister of Health.
G1R1J, continued the Deputy Minister of Health, will be strengthened with dengue prevention and control innovations such as the dengue vaccine which has been proven effective and efficient in preventing dengue fever. Currently there are two types of dengue vaccine that have received permission for use from the POM and are circulating in the community. The two vaccines are the Dengvaxia vaccine and the Qdenga vaccine.
Another anticipatory effort that is also being promoted by the government is eradicating dengue by sterilizing the Aedes aegypti mosquito using Wolbachia mosquitoes.
The Deputy Minister of Health emphasized that efforts to overcome dengue do not only rely on the government’s capabilities alone, but must be carried out jointly by involving all parties according to their strengths in their respective fields.
“Learning from the COVID-19 case, this cannot be an exclusive program of the Ministry of Health, but rather an inclusive program involving all elements of society, including the DPR RI Health Caucus,” said the Deputy Minister of Health.
“Thank you for the friendly collaboration between the government and the DPR RI. Hopefully the target of zero deaths from dengue by 2030 will be achieved. “I hope this coalition can take real action, not just slogans,” continued the Deputy Minister of Health.
On the same occasion, Chairman of the DPR RI Health Caucus and member of Commission IX DPR RI, Suir Syam, said that it was one of the priority programs in the 2020-2024 RPJMN.
He also agreed that overcoming dengue requires joint collaboration involving cross-sectors to accelerate the achievement of the target of zero deaths from dengue by 2023.
Realizing this, in order to ensure the achievement of these goals, as well as the need to accelerate the control of dengue as a threat to public health in Indonesia, the DPR RI Health Caucus together with the Ministry of Health agreed to launch the Joint Coalition Against Dengue (KOBAR Against Dengue) to gather joint support and strengthen the commitment of participants in tackling dengue in Indonesia.
“We are using this joint coalition under the name KOBAR Against Dengue to gather support in overcoming dengue in Indonesia. “We believe that the launch of KOBAR against dengue is a strategic effort to fulfill the State’s responsibility towards the global target of zero deaths due to dengue by 20230,” hoped Suir Syam.
