According to the party leader of the National Party, John Barilaro, the protection policy is going too far. Onerous conditions are being imposed on landowners on how they manage their land, Barilaro said.
“We think the policy is a way to cleanse the regions, attack landowners’ property rights and do nothing to support koalas.” He also says he is “not anti-koala”. “The National Party is facing a thriving koala population. We actually want the population to double.”
New Ministry
The Liberal Party does not agree with Barilaro’s statements and calls the measures necessary. Green party leader Adam Bandt tweeted that the National Party “is blowing up the government because they want rogue landowners to kill more koalas.” According to some conservationists, current policies are not doing enough to protect koalas.
Prime Minister Berejiklian has given the National Party an ultimatum: if the party does not withdraw the threat by Friday morning, the prime minister will replace the ministers.
