KNWU’s ambitious plan: Dutch championships in Swiss Alps

The KNWU has ambitious plans for the Dutch road cycling championships. If it is up to the union, these will eventually be held in Switzerland.

With that, the real climbers could become the Dutch champion once. The possibilities for this are limited in your own country. According to Thorwald Veneberg, general director at the KNWU, even Limburg is too flat to shake off the (top) sprinters.

No Austria

According to Veneberg, the plan was made once and later put forward again by Richard Plugge, director of Jumbo-Visma. After that, the union started to seriously investigate.

“I first contacted Austria, the region where the World Cup were held,” says Veneberg. “Well that was a bit difficult. Then we also spoke with the Swiss federation, Swiss regions and the organization of the Tour de Suisse. They saw opportunities.”

Working out plans

According to Veneberg, there is now a good plan that needs to be worked out. Jumbo-Visma seems to see some benefits, but little is known about the other cycling teams. But Veneberg understands if there are concerns.
