KNRM ends search for missing fourteen-year-old girl near Ameland | NOW

The fourteen-year-old girl who went missing on Saturday evening north of Buren on Ameland has not yet been found on Sunday evening. The Royal Dutch Rescue Society (KNRM) has definitively discontinued the search for the girl, a spokesperson for the KNRM tells NU.nl.

“Because the area has been searched so much, it is assumed that further search has no effect,” said the spokesman. It is believed that the girl is no longer alive. The police keep an eye on Ameland’s coastline if the girl’s body washes up.

The KNRM spokesperson has heard that fishermen may resume the search for the body on Monday. According to RTV North On Monday morning, twenty shrimp cutters will look for the girl.

The KNRM and a coastguard helicopter searched for the girl on Saturday night and Sunday. On Sunday, the missing girl was searched on the water, the beach, in the dunes and further surroundings. A boat with sonar equipment from the National Police Unit was also used in the search.

The girl disappeared on Saturday evening around 10:30 PM when she watched the sunset with her father and sister in the surf. According to the KNRM, the strong current in the sea may have caused the family members to drift.

The father and the youngest daughter were able to reach the beach again themselves. The fourteen-year-old girl went missing and has still not been found. The German family was on the island to celebrate a holiday, says mayor Leo Pieter Stoel van Ameland Omrop Fryslân.
