Know the Symptoms, Treatment, and Diagnosis of Marburg Virus

Jakarta: Pandemic covid-19 until now it is still happening, but recently a potential outbreak was reported virus Marburg or Marburg virus disease (MVD) which is similar to Ebola.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) this disease is very malignant. Can cause dengue fever, with a mortality ratio of up to 88 percent.

Reporting from the official WHO website, the two major outbreaks that started the spread of this virus occurred in Marburg and Frankfurt, Germany and in Belgrade, Serbia in 1967. The outbreak is linked to laboratory work using African green monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops) imported from Uganda.

Symptom

The illness caused by the Marburg virus begins suddenly, with a high fever, severe headache, and severe malaise. Muscle aches and overall aches are common features. Severe diarrhea, abdominal pain and cramping, nausea and vomiting may begin on the third day. Diarrhea can last for a week.

Many patients present with severe bleeding manifestations within 7 days, and fatal cases usually have bleeding, often from multiple areas. Fresh blood in vomit and feces is often accompanied by bleeding from the nose, gums, and vagina.

During the severe phase of the disease, the patient develops a high fever. Disorders of the central nervous system can result in confusion, irritability and aggression. Orchitis (inflammation of the testicles) has been reported to occasionally occur in the late phase (15 days).

In fatal cases, death usually occurs between the 8th and 9th day after initial symptoms appear. It is usually preceded by severe blood loss and shock.

Maintenance

Supportive care such as rehydration with oral or intravenous fluids, and treatment of specific symptoms improves survival. There is no proven treatment available for Marburg virus disease. However, various potential treatments including blood products, immune therapy and drug therapy are currently being evaluated.

Diagnosis

It is difficult to clinically differentiate Marburg virus disease (MVD) from other infectious diseases such as malaria, typhoid fever, shigellosis, meningitis and other viral hemorrhagic fevers. Confirmation that the symptoms are caused by infection with the Marburg virus is made using the following diagnostic methods:

– Antibody enzyme-associated immunosorbent assay (ELISA)
– Antigen detection test
– Serum neutralization test
– Reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay
– Isolation of viruses by cell culture
(FIR)
