TEMPO.CO, Jakarta –Hepatitis is inflammation of the liver. There are five types of hepatitis, but the most common are hepatitis A, B, and C, all of which affect your liver.
Of World Hepatitis Day, today is July 28, this is the right moment to investigate hepatitis again. Hepatitis is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus. This condition can heal on its own or it can progress to fibrosis (scarring), cirrhosis or liver cancer. This is usually the result of a viral infection, but there are other possible causes of hepatitis.
Virus Hepatitis
Viral hepatitis is the most common cause of hepatitis in the world but other infections, toxic substances (eg alcohol, certain drugs), and autoimmune diseases can also cause hepatitis.
Quoting from www.who.int, there are 5 main hepatitis viruses, which are referred to as types A, B, C, D and E. These five types are the most worrying because of the burden of disease and death they cause as well as the potential for outbreaks and epidemic spread.
In particular, types B and C cause chronic disease in hundreds of millions of people and are also the most common causes of liver cirrhosis and cancer. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 354 million people are currently living with chronic hepatitis B and C globally.
Types of Hepatitis
1. Hepatitis A
Launching from Healthline, hepatitis A is the result of infection with the hepatitis A virus (HAV). This type of hepatitis is a short-term acute illness.
2. Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B is the result of infection with the hepatitis B virus (HBV). Hepatitis B is also an ongoing chronic condition. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 826,000 people live with chronic hepatitis B in the United States and about 257 million people worldwide.
3. Hepatitis C
Hepatitis C originates from the hepatitis C virus (HCV). HCV is one of the most common blood-borne viral infections in the United States and usually presents as a long-term condition. According to the CDC, there are approximately 2.4 million Americans currently living with the chronic form of this infection.
4. Hepatitis D
Hepatitis D is rarely co-occurring with hepatitis B infection. The hepatitis D virus (HDV) causes inflammation of the liver like the other types, but a person cannot get HDV without an existing hepatitis B infection. Globally, HDV affects nearly 5 percent of people with chronic hepatitis B.
5. Hepatitis E
Hepatitis E is a water-borne disease resulting from exposure to the hepatitis E virus (HEV). Hepatitis E is usually found in areas with poor sanitation and usually comes from polluted water. Hepatitis E is usually acute but can be very dangerous in pregnant women.
