KNMI warns of storms Thursday due to Hurricane Kirk ‘designated’

Climate change can create ‘deniers’ who move in our direction

NOS news

The Netherlands could experience heavy winds and a lot of rain on Thursday, the KNMI warns. This is due to Hurricane Kirk, which is now moving across the Atlantic Ocean. Although Kirk is decreasing in strength, it may lead to very stormy weather in Western Europe.

It is not yet known how strong the wind will be and how much rain will fall. According to the KNMI, this depends on the exact path the storm takes. Different weather models do not provide a clear picture yet.

Kirk is now in the middle of the ocean. By the weekend, it had become a Category 4 hurricane, the second highest level. It has now weakened into an old hurricane, one that is increasingly losing its tropical characteristics.

According to the latest calculations, Kirk will make landfall over western France through northern Spain on Wednesday evening. Wind gusts of over 100 kilometers per hour can occur there. A lot of rain is expected there as well. Kirk then sails to Germany.

In previous models, the storm seemed to be passing the Netherlands, but its course has moved further south. However, it can also be windy and wet here, says the KNMI. The afternoon temperature will also drop to around 10 degrees on Thursday and Friday.

It is not often that a hurricane that started near the Caribbean reaches Europe. Climate change can create ‘deniers’ who will move in our direction, instead of towards the United States. The intensity and amount of rain in the storms is also increasing, writes the KNMI.
