Knives for a place in the ATP finals:

Despite the fact that it has been clear for a while already, on Monday the final confirmation came that Casper Ruud once again climbs the world rankings. Now he is ranked as the ninth best tennis player in the world.

The season sprint has really started, and Team Ruud now has one goal in mind – the ATP final in Turin.

The tournament kicks off on November 14, and only the eight best tennis players in this calendar year will be allowed to participate. In this ranking, Ruud is number seven in the world. However, he gets a tough fight on the way to Turin.

Before Indian Wells, it was especially Polish Hubert Hurkacz and Italian Jannik Sinner who breathed the Norwegian in the neck. Hurkacz also went one notch further than Ruud managed and got more points. Sinner, however, smoked out at the same time as Ruud.

But in the California desert, where 1,000 ATP points were played, another person also entered the battle for a place in Turin. Cameron Norrie, who Ruud swept off the field in the final in San Diego before Indian Wells, surprised a lot and won the whole tournament.

– I think it got a little tougher now that Norrie won and signed up. All credit to him for the victory there. It was probably thought in advance that one of the very best would win in Indian Wells, and it would not have been so crazy for Casper, says father and coach of the tennis set, Christian Ruud to TV 2.

Norrie’s victory and scoring ensured that the Briton made a solid jump on the list and is now only 175 points behind Ruud, according to the live table.

It also shows that the Torino race looks like this now:

1. Novak Djokovic – 8370 points

2. Daniil Medvedev – 6470

3. Stefanos Tsitsipas – 5650

4. Alexander Zverev – 5095

5. Andrey Rublev – 4165

6. Matteo Berrettini – 4000

7. Casper Ruud – 3015

8. Rafael Nadal – 2985

9. Hubert Hurkacz – 2955

10. Cameron Norrie – 2840

11. Jannik Sinner – 2345

12. Félix Auger-Aliassime – 2330

Rafal Nadal, however, drops down the list as he is injured and then of course does not play for points.

Two tournaments in particular will be decisive for who manages to run away with a final ticket to Turin. and there are the tournaments in Vienna and Paris. In Vienna, about 500 ATP points are played, while in Paris, about 1,000 are played. In addition, there are also four ATP250 tournaments left.

Ruud will play in Vienna and Paris himself. In all probability, most things will be clear after the tournament in Paris. If there is still doubt, the athletes will have one last chance in the Stockholm Open where 250 points are played. It goes off the stack the week before Turin.

– A similar situation can quickly appear in Paris as with Norrie in Indian Wells. Tournament victories are not reserved for the best. Casper has played very well this year, but if he does not manage it, he will not succeed. Historically, it is probably not the indoor tournaments Casper has claimed the best in, but he has been good at hardcourt. We are still optimistic that Casper can pick up some points, says Christian Ruud about the opportunities for the 22-year-old.

As is well known, Ruud won the ATP250 tournament in San Diego ahead of the ATP Masters in Indian Wells. It surprised several as it was a very strong field that posed from the start. Christian Ruud is aware that the eight who get to travel to Turin are the eight who have deserved the most.

– Casper has won five titles, participated in the Laver Cup and is among the ten best tennis players in the world. If Torino comes in addition, everything has really worked out. But it will be a real fight for that place.
