In Knittelfeld, learning and music are now combined at one location. After regular lessons, students can either bridge the waiting time with lunch or supervision or go straight to the music school.

With the opening of the new school campus on Kärntner Straße, a significant step was taken for the region. After a thorough general renovation and modernization of the building, the Knittelfeld Federal High School and Federal Real High School and the music school are now united in a modern, future-oriented school complex. With modern teaching methods, pioneering technology and sustainable architecture, this location will set new standards and shape the educational landscape in Knittelfeld in the long term.

Merging of music school and high school

The innovative school concept that was successfully implemented here goes beyond a mere spatial redesign and also includes a significant expansion of content. With the “educational bridge” – a 75-meter-long connection made of 70 tons of steel – the high school and the music school were united at a common location. This architectural solution not only represents collaboration between the two institutions, but is also an essential part of the new infrastructure. A clear example of this was the Climateverse exhibition that recently took place directly on the bridge.

Investment in education

“Despite the challenging times, Knittelfeld has managed to raise the money to continue investing in education and thus in the future of the students,” said Deputy State Governor Anton Lang (SPÖ). As soon as school started, the students in the second and third grades of the BG/BRG Knittelfeld moved into the modern classrooms on the first floor of the new school building. The music school, on the other hand, uses the rooms on the second floor.

Music school active since autumn 2024

The music school has also been active here since autumn 2024 and offers its lessons in specially acoustically and spatially optimized rooms. This includes a recording studio and a small event hall on the ground floor, which are shared by both schools. The event hall is used, among other things, for school events, while the high school’s workrooms and the music school’s rooms, including a drum classroom and a library with discography, are also located on the ground floor.

Sustainable construction of the new federal high school campus

The school campus not only stands for innovative educational approaches, but also for environmentally conscious construction. “By renovating existing buildings and using this building structure, no additional areas had to be sealed,” he said Mayor Bergmann. In addition, a photovoltaic system on the roof ensures a sustainable energy supply, while energy-efficient underfloor heating ensures a pleasant indoor climate throughout the building.

Big win for Knittelfeld

The new location significantly strengthens the Knittelfeld music school. 550 students and 20 teachers have already moved into the modern classrooms, which are specifically tailored to the needs of musical training. The close cooperation with the BG/BRG enables the students to attend music lessons directly after regular school lessons. Waiting times can also be usefully bridged with lunch or afternoon care. “The shared school campus is a huge benefit for the city. It strengthens music lessons and offers the children an optimal learning environment,” explained the mayor.

Musical opening ceremony

Deputy State Governor Anton Lang (SPÖ) commented on the opening ceremony on Facebook. “The campus will be a place that will best promote their talents and skills. And the students impressively demonstrated how much musical talent there is at this school at the grand opening ceremony!” he wrote in a post.
