It is the latest in a series of incidents that show growing tensions in France’s education system.
No one was injured in the incident in Rennes, however, the prosecutor’s office announced that a criminal investigation had been launched.
“This morning, during the lesson, the student threatened the teacher with a knife. The shocked students were immediately taken to safety,” the local education board said in a statement.
The student, born in 2011, “arrived in the classroom, apparently with the intention of killing the English teacher, armed with a large knife,” Rennes prosecutor Philippe Astrick said.
“During the class, she threatened the victim with a knife, who ran away,” said the prosecutor.
School staff disarmed the threat, he added.
France has large Muslim and Jewish communities, and tensions in schools have been palpable. Sometimes it has to do with the war between Israel and Hamas.
In October, a former teacher was stabbed to death by a radicalized Islamist in Arras, northwestern France.
Teachers at a school in the Paris region went on strike this week after students objected to showing naked women in class by Renaissance painter Giuseppe Cesari.
