A video clip widely circulated on social media on Tuesday documented the moment of the knife attack on South Korean opposition leader Lee Jae-myung, in the coastal city of Busan in the southeast of the country.
The South Korean Yonhap News Agency published a picture showing the Korean politician lying on the ground with his wound covered with a handkerchief.
Lee, who is considered one of the most famous opponents in South Korea, lost to conservative Yoon Suk-yeol in the 2022 presidential elections.
For his part, South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol expressed his “deep concern” after the attack on the opposition leader, according to his spokeswoman Kim Su-kyung.
Yoon stressed that “our society must never tolerate this type of violence under any circumstances,” according to Agence France-Presse.
Opposition Leader Lee was a former factory worker who was involved in an industrial accident when he was a teenage school dropout. But his attempt to reach the presidency was overshadowed by a series of scandals.
The Korean politician avoided arrest in September when a court rejected a request to temporarily detain him pending trial on various corruption charges.
He still faces trial on bribery charges linked to a company suspected of illegally transferring $8 million to North Korea.
