Knife attack in Würzburg: Somalis express themselves for the first time

As Senior Public Prosecutor Florian Weinzierl from the Public Prosecutor General in Munich confirmed to the BR, the 32-year-old Somali was questioned on Thursday (30.09.2021). Spokesman Florian Weinzierl did not want to comment on the content.

Defense attorney to daily newspaper: Client wants to participate in the investigation

According to information from the Main-Post, the interrogation was possible because the offender’s state of health had greatly improved. This was confirmed by the man’s defense lawyer, the Würzburg lawyer Hanjo Schrepfer, to the daily newspaper: “He is willing to participate in the investigation,” Schrepfer is quoted as saying. In a video interrogation over several hours, his client would have commented on the act and the motives. He “spoke very openly about the Tattag and his life”.

Somalis have “heard voices”

In addition, the Somali had expressly shown regret that he had killed and seriously injured people. Schrepfer said it had become clear that his client “acted in a state of incapacity” during the attack. He is said to have “heard voices”, writes the Main-Post.

Perpetrator in psychiatry and possibly incapable of guilt

On June 25, the Somali man apparently stabbed and killed three women at random in a department store on Barbarossaplatz in Würzburg. More people were injured. After his arrest, several attempts to question the Somali remained unsuccessful. The 32-year-old was subsequently transferred from pre-trial detention to psychiatry.

As announced by the Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, the psychiatric assessment currently comes to the conclusion that the accused may have been incapable of guilt at the time of the offense. A final opinion is expected by the end of October.
