The man in his 20s has been arrested. Kyodo News reports that 15 are injured in the attack, while the broadcaster NHK reports that the number is 17 and that a man in his 60s is seriously injured.
Japanese media write that the man was dressed as the Joker from the Batman movies, reports Reuters.
Eyewitnesses tell NHK that it creates fear that the attack will take place in connection with Halloween, where several people walk around the streets of Tokyo dressed up.
Social media videos show people smashing windows to jump off the train on the Keio line. After spreading flammable liquid around the train, the man must have lit it.
– At first I thought it was a Halloween stunt. But I ran away when a man with a long knife came. I was lucky not to get hurt, says one man.
According to Reuters, a witness says that the man must have waved a long, bloody knife.
– He held a knife and began to spread a liquid. He did it without emotion, completely mechanically. I think it spread fear among everyone, says a woman who was on the subway.
In August, nine people were injured in another knife attack on a commuter train in Tokyo, while two people were injured in an acid attack on the subway the same month.
