Man stabs two women at famous MoMA

The Museum of Modern Art in New York City has to be evacuated after a man stabbed two female employees at the museum. Both women are rushed to a nearby hospital and are in stable condition.

Two employees were injured in a knife attack at the world-famous Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York on Saturday afternoon (local time). A visitor to the museum apparently attacked the employees out of anger at the withdrawal of his annual pass, the police said.

The museum was evacuated after the attack and closed for the rest of the day. Videos circulating on social media show dozens of people exiting the museum in a large crowd. The two women were wounded “in the back, collarbone and neck,” said New York City Police Department Deputy Chief John Miller. The women were immediately taken to a hospital and “we were told they would be fine.”

A police spokesman told the AFP news agency that no arrests had been made. He gave no information about the background of the crime. Several US media reported that police had identified a suspect. The New York police called for people to avoid the area around the museum “due to police investigations”.

The suspect is known to the police

The suspect was videotaped leaving the museum and police have determined the direction of his escape. The incident is ongoing and the investigation is still in its early stages, police said.

“Around 4:15 p.m. this afternoon, a person entered the museum, tried to gain entry by presenting their membership card and was turned away because their membership had expired. Their membership was inactive on two different days due to two incidents of disorderly conduct here at the museum expired in the past few days,” Miller said.

The suspect, who regularly visits MoMA, is known to the NYPD and is wanted by police in connection with two other incidents in Midtown Manhattan, where the museum is located, Miller said.
